Throughout this website and all accompanying documentation, we will refer to all bodies across the UK to which candidates apply for places on ST3 programmes as regions. This is for simplicity because there is variation in the terms for these organisations.
Additionally, in some specialties regions cluster together for recruitment so the term region can be used to represent a cluster of regions.
In this section you can find summary information about each region as well as links to more detailed information.
England
Postgraduate medical training in England is overseen by Health Education England (HEE). HEE work across seven regions, although some regions have distinct sub-regions within this and there is a page for each of these with summary information about each.
Devolved nations
Outside of England, the following bodies are responsible for medical education and training:
- Northern Ireland is handled by the Northern Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA).
- Scotland is NHS Education for Scotland (NES).
- Wales is the Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).
